the Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a GREat part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me. I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday. Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre. My first impression of this story was from screen. It's long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I don't remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It's pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine,though I didn't think she's beautiful. But she's smart. However, I didn't pay much attention to the plot. I thought it's so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven't read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice. In fact, I didn't understand the story at that time. I didn't know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didn't find where' s the prejudice. I thought it's normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I'm a prejudiced person so I can't find where's wrong. I merely like to do the things I like. The the old man and the seais a brief but meaningful story. After fishing nothing during the past 84 days, the old fisherman San Diego finally captured a salmon, which weight is over 1500 pounds. After a tough struggle, exactly, three days’ standoff, the old man eventually killed the big fish that came to surface because of being exhausted. However, on the way to harbor, the old man was attacked by many sharks who tracked after the smell of the dead salmon, what he still hold was only the bone of the big fish when he arrived at port.
It is said that the author, Ernest Hemingway who is a great American writer wrote the novel in only eight weeks, basing on one of his friend’s true experience. He created the figure of the old man which was later called by people “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers.
In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to ha一ve symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong but couldn’t get harvest from the sea. He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate. He did win a bit—he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton of the fish with his hands bleeding. On the other hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didn’t lose his face. He beha一ved like a real man, a tough man.
It’s a tragic novel, but it’s also a heroic symphony. The poor old fisherman was regarded as a failure by other fishers as he had captured nothing during the past 84 days. When he fished that 1500-pound salmon, he determined to fight to death even though he knew clearly that the big fish was much stronger than him, and finally, he succeeded. But the ordeal was not to the end even he had succeeded in capturing the big fish. The salmon was bigger than his fishing-boat, he dad no choices but binding the fish to one side of his boat. During his way home, the dead salmon was attacked again and again by shakes followed after the smell of blood. He had to do everything he could do to protect his victory. Next day he caught a huge marlin which is bigger than his boat and took a formidable battle with it. He beat it at the end. Although he only got a skeleton of the giant marlin at last he is also a great hero in many people’s heart.

In the past a few days, we learned something about a novel called the old man and the sea, after learning it, I have some thoughts about it.
The story introduced an old experienced fisherman to us. His name is Santiago. He has not caught any fish for 84 days, so the 85th day, he went to the deep sea, trying to get some fish. It was a hard time when Santiago floated on the sea for almost 3 days in order to catch a big fish called marlin. Finally, he made it. But unfortunately, the smell of blood attracted a lot of sharks. At last, all his effort to drive away the sharks was in vain. His marlin was eaten up, and he still got nothing.
Although the consequence was not so good, I still believe that Santiago is a real hero. A hero, not means that he is never afraid of anything, but means that he is really afraid, but he never gives up. This is hero. In addition, his words in this story also impressed me a lot. He sai
d,“man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed, but not defeatded.’’ Perhaps we wish that everything can go well in our daily lives, but as we know, it is only a wish. We are sure to meet some trouble in our whole lives, so we must be brave. We can never give up. No matter how old we are, no matter how unlucky we are,
no matter how hard the problems are, we are expected to solve those problems bravely, and never say:“no”.
Of course, now we are college students, we may have not met any problems that were really difficult to solve. Was reading the big fish’s smell of blood is smelled by one crowd of sharkfish， struggled swims snatches the food， old person’s left hand happen to in theconvulsions， he only could use the right hand， with wooden stick， the mouth andso on all was allowed to use for the weapon self-defense which attacked， andfinally expelled this crowd of shark fish. But the big fish’s meat was alreadyeaten one most， but the old person also charmingly criticized oneself the lefthand " this work time actually was resting " time， I also was subdued by the oldperson optimistic spirit. In the life， some losses are inevitable， we shouldtreat by the optimistic manner， cannot be calculating.
Finally， the novel sees by one youth the senior fisherman fully has 18 footlong big marlin in the measure， once more described this fish’s hugeness，explained senior fisherman overes the difficulty was big， non- was more monthan.
The novel eulogized the spirit which the senior fisherman fear hard anddangerous diligently did not struggle， we also should like his such， could notsatisfy the present situation， should positively to above， do any matter all isrelentless， meets difficultly must wele difficultly above， could give up halfwayin no way. Only has this， we only then can obtain a bigger success and thevictory.
