At the time of birth, babies can explore(探索) all of the five senses—hearing, seeing, touching, tasting, and smelling, though these senses are not fully developed. They explore the new world with their available senses.

Right from the time of birth, babies have a good understanding of sound. In fact, the sense of hearing develops much before the birth of them. When in their mother’s womb(子宮), they can hear their mothers’ heartbeats. _________. And it is very easy for them to understand the tone (語調(diào)) of speech.

The sight also develops with time. Just after birth, babies can see things which are within eight to ten inches from their eyes. 37 .With time their range of vision and understanding of colors also develop.

38 .They love sleeping in lap(大腿) just because personal touches make them feel safe. Touch is an important sense, which affects the relationship between the parents and their babies.

Babies explore most things by putting them inside their mouth. 39 .And they will spit (吐) out anything that doesn’t taste good immediately.

Babies recognize their mother through smell. 40 .They also quickly recognize the smell of the food or fruit they love. With time, they develop an understanding of all the smells around.

Though the sensory development takes a long time, you can certainly help to make it fast. But remember: do not over—burden your kid, and do not be overprotective about your kid.

          A. Small babies love to be touched

          B. They express their feelings by cries.

          C. They taste them through their sensitive tongue

“Getting late for a meeting, I need to run,” he said, as he put his coat over the shoulder and rushed out of the house. As he drove away, she came running down the stairs two at a time. “Wait, wait,” she shouted, but he had already left.

“He forgot to give me a goodbye kiss,” she said in a low, sad voice that shook under the weight of the hurt. She called him and said, “You left without giving me a kiss.” “I am sorry, sweetheart,” he said, his voice shaking. “It is okay,” she said, trying to be all grown-up as she cut the call.

She ate her breakfast quickly, put on her shoes, picked up her school bag and started to walk out of the door. Her shoulders were slumped(耷拉) and her eyes were filled with tears. As she climbed down the steps, a car came to a stop outside the house. He got out of the car. She ran to him.

Each year on Halloween, children look forward to trick-or-treating(不請客就搗亂) for candies. But for some kids, eating Halloween candies can be dangerous.

That’s because 1 out of every 13 kids in the US have a food allergy(過敏癥). They are allergic to ingredients(成分) in many Halloween candies, such as peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, and beans. If they eat these foods, they will get sick or even die.

“I had to throw away all my candies with tears,” eight-year-old Conlen said. Conlen is allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, and dairy. Twelve-year-old Kylie is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. She has been trick-or-treating only twice. “I brought my candies home and gave them to the neightbors,” Kylie said, “It felt terrible.”

But this year, Conlen, Kylie and other kids with food allergies will have a chance for a happy Halloween. That’s because nearly 100,000 families across the US have promised to take part in the Teal Pumpkin Project(TPP), which was started last year by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). FARE is an organization that works to improve the lives of people with food allergies. Through the project, the families agree to have nonfood items for trick-or-treaters, including trinkets(小飾品) and toys.

To take part in the project, people buy a teal(藍(lán)綠色) pumpkin or paint a pumpkin teal and place it in front of their house. The painted pumpkins let trick-or-treaters know that nonfood items are available here. The families also add their home addresses to an online map, making it easier for trick-or-treaters to find them.

Kylie loves the idea. “The TPP makes Halloween fun and safe,” she said “It makes me feel like a normal kid, and it makes everyone feel included.”

          C. providing them with trinkets and toys as treats.

          D. asking them for home addresses and sending them gifts.

          31. Where is the passage most probably taken from ?

          A. A magazine about the history of festivals.
