In many countries it has long been the tradition to hold an annual tree or forest festival. The origin of such celebrations dates back to antiquity and is in the dawn of religious feeling and awe for what trees represented. However, Arbor Day, as it is commonly known today, is of American origin and evolved from conditions peculiar to the Great Plains. It was first observed in Nebraska in 1872.
The idea, conceived by J.S. Morton, then a member of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture, was one of forest conservation. It was a move to promote replanting, following deforestation, and to plant up treeless areas. The idea has spread widely to other lands where it is variously celebrated as the Festival of Trees, Greening Week of Japan, The New Years Days of Trees in Israel, The Tree-loving Week of Korea, The Reforestation Week of Yugoslavia, The Students Afforestation Day of Iceland and The National Festival of Tree Planting in India. Arbor Day in its various forms is now recognised in more than fifty countries.

植樹節(jié)(Arbor Day/Tree Planting Day)是一些國家以法律形式規(guī)定的以宣傳森林效益，并動(dòng)員群眾參加造林為活動(dòng)內(nèi)容的節(jié)日。按時(shí)間長短可分為植樹日、植樹周或植樹月，總稱植樹節(jié)。通過這種活動(dòng)，激發(fā)人們愛林、造林的感情，提高人們對(duì)森林功用的認(rèn)識(shí)，促進(jìn)國土綠化，達(dá)到愛林護(hù)林和擴(kuò)大森林資源、改善生態(tài)環(huán)境的目的。是為了動(dòng)員全民植樹而規(guī)定的節(jié)日。1979年2月23日，我國第五屆全國人大常務(wù)委員會(huì)第六次會(huì)議決定，仍以3月12日為中國的植樹節(jié)，以鼓勵(lì)全國各族人民植樹造林，綠化祖國，改善環(huán)境，造福子孫后代。
近代植樹節(jié)最早是由美國的內(nèi)布拉斯加州發(fā)起的。19世紀(jì)以前，內(nèi)布拉斯加州是一片光禿禿的荒原，樹木稀少，土地干燥，大風(fēng)一起，黃沙滿天，人民深受其苦。1872年，美國著名農(nóng)學(xué)家朱利葉斯·斯特林·莫爾頓提議在內(nèi)布拉斯加州規(guī)定植樹節(jié)，動(dòng)員人民有計(jì)劃地植樹造林。
當(dāng)時(shí)州農(nóng)業(yè)局通過決議采納了這一提議，并由州長親自規(guī)定今后每年4月份的第三個(gè)星期三為植樹節(jié)。這一決定做出后，當(dāng)年就植樹上百萬棵。此后的16年間，又先后植樹6億棵，終于使內(nèi)布拉斯加州10萬公頃的荒野變成了茂密的森林。為了表彰莫爾頓的功績，1885年州議會(huì)正式規(guī)定以莫爾領(lǐng)先生的生日4月22日為每年的植樹節(jié)，并放假一天。
在美國，植樹節(jié)是一個(gè)州定節(jié)日，沒有全國統(tǒng)一規(guī)定的日期。但是每年4、5月間，美國各州都要組織植樹節(jié)活動(dòng)。例如，羅德艾蘭州規(guī)定每年5月份的第二個(gè)星期五為植樹節(jié)，并放假一天。其他各州有的是固定日期，也有的是每年由州長或州的其他政府部門臨時(shí)決定植樹節(jié)日期。每當(dāng)植樹節(jié)到來，以學(xué)生為主的社會(huì)各界群眾組成浩浩蕩蕩的植樹大軍，投入植樹活動(dòng)。
