fallacious adj. 錯誤的,謬誤的
首先看該詞中含有我們熟悉的單詞fall, fall的基本意思:掉下來,摔跟斗;人生難免摔跟斗,犯錯誤;所以英文中含有fall有錯誤的意思,大家可以聯系下相關詞匯false, fault, faulty; 其實fallacious 來自名詞fallacy (錯誤,謬誤),fallacy 可以理解為fall+acy, -acy 一般是表示名詞的后綴。順帶擴充下fallible(容易犯錯的)infallible(永不犯錯的)。大家知道美語里面fall還有秋天的意思,為什么呢?秋天果實成熟了,就要fall(掉下來)了.
consensus n. 共識
這個詞一看三部分 con-, -sens-,-us. 大家知道英文中co系列的前綴指的是together 一起的意思,包括co-, con-, com-, cor-等形式。Sense 本身也是一個單詞,表示‘感覺’等意思。-us做后綴一般表示名詞,如status(地位)。所以整個詞consensus表示大家都感覺是一致的,共識。英文中-sens- 和 –sent- 作為詞根都表示“sense”。更多單詞如:sensible, sensitive, consent(同意),resent(反感),sentiment(情感), sentimental(多愁善感的), presentiment(預感) 等。
discordant adj 不和的 不調和的
同樣該詞由三部分構成;dis-表示否定;-cord-作為詞根表示“心”,-ant-一般是形容詞或名詞結尾。大家可以聯想下core(核心),concord(協和),accord(一致),dicord (不和),其實英語中-card-也可表示“心”;electrocardiogram大家能猜到意思嗎?心電圖。
embellish vt 美化,裝飾
em-前綴,表示外面outsite, 英文中ex-相關的前綴很多,表示outside, 或者說當我們看到e開頭的單詞基本都包含這個意思。中間這個-bell-聯系一下belle (美麗,美女) 到處能看到百麗的廣告“因為百麗,所以美麗”。百麗的英文標志為belle. –ish 很好理解,作為后綴表示動詞、名詞、形容詞都有可能。如finish, establish, diminish等等。
總之,當我們拿到一個生詞的時候,一定要看看其中有沒有哪些部分是我們已知的,要善于從部分推導出整個單詞的意思。當然,熟悉一定量的詞根是必要的,下一講,我們將一起探討SAT高頻詞匯里面最重要的幾十個詞根。
