There was a king who had twelve beautiful daughters. They slept in twelve beds all in one room; and when they went to bed, the doors were shut and locked up; but every morning their shoes were found to be quite worn through as if they had been danced in all night; and yet nobody could find out how it happened, or where they had been.

Then the king made it known to all the land, that if any person could discover the secret, and find out where it was that the princesses danced in the night, he should have the one he liked best for his wife, and should be king after his death; but whoever tried and did not succeed, after three days and nights, should be put to death.

A kings son soon came. He was well entertained, and in the evening was taken to the chamber next to the one where the princesses lay in their twelve beds. There he was to sit and watch where they went to dance; and, in order that nothing might pass without his hearing it, the door of his chamber was left open. But the kings son soon fell asleep; and when he awoke in the morning he found that the princesses had all been dancing, for the soles of their shoes were full of holes. The same thing happened the second and third night: so the king ordered his head to be cut off. After him came several others; but they had all the same luck, and all lost their lives in the same manner.

Long ago in a small, faraway village, there was a place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived,he hounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise,he found himself staring at 1000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his.

He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1000 great smiles just as warm and firendly. As he left the House,he thought to himself,This is a wonderful place. I will e back and visit it often.

In this same village, another little dog,who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him,he growled at them and was horrified to see 1000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left,he thought to himself,That is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again.

All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see in Oh,Mr. Fox,shouted the cat. You and your hundred tricks are left in the lurch. If you been able to climb like I can,you would not have lost your life.

Between Macedon and Thessaly of eastern Greece there stood a high mountain. Its cloudy top rushed into the very heavens. On the top of the mountain, the home of the gods was bathed in brightness.

At Olympus Zeus ruled as the father of gods and men. Zeus was not a crude ruler by any standards. All the gods listened to his final words,it was true. But Zeus made them all sit on a committee of twelve members, including six gods and six goddesses.

The first in the Olympian crowd sat Zeus himself. He was the overlord of gods and men and the operator of the thunderbolt .Next to him was Hera, his proud and greeneyed queen.Poseidon was ruler of the sea,And Hades, king of the lower world, had no seat in the committee.Apollo was the god of the sun, music and poetry, while his twinsister Artemis was the goddess of the moon and the chase. Athena was the goddess of wisdom and patroness of house holdarts.Hestin, the goddess of the family, represented home life and family happiness. The frightening Ares was the god of war,and the charming Aphrodite the goddess of love and beauty. The god of fire,Hephaestus, was the forger of the thunderbolts of Zeus. The wing footed messenger Hermes was the god of invention and commerce;and the goddess of grains and harvests,Demeter, looked after agriculture and stood for mother ofcivilization.

All the chief gods mentioned above took human forms of incomparable beauty and grace. Often moved by human feelings and desires, they frequently gave way to anger and jealousy. They became involved in ceaseless battles with the world of man. Among themselves at Olympus they plotted and struggled for power. In the human world they experienced competitions and difficulties. They enjoyed earthly friendships and loves.Acrowd of everlasting gods looked and acted in a perfectly human fashion that is what all gods at Olympus actually were.

The gorillas in the valleys in the south often lived together in groups of several tens. They were fond of drinking wine, and even fonder of imitating mans behavior.

People knew very well their habits and often put wine or distillers grains on the roadside together with many straw sandals connected together with ropes.

The gorillas knew this was a trick to lure3 them into traps and cursed:"Humph! Do you think we dont know your tricks? Well never be taken in!"

So they called one another, turned round and left.

But they had already smelled the aroma of the wine, and couldnt bear to part with it. Even after they left, they would turn their heads to look back. When they saw no one there, they would turn back; and after they turned back, they were afraid of being deceived, and left again. After much hesitation5, they finally said to themselves: "Just for a taste of the wine. It wont matter as long as we dont get drunk."

Shortly afterwards, they agreed to come back to drink the wine. When they got drunk, they forgot everything. Every gorilla1 put on the straw sandals and imitated the way man walks.

As a result, they fell down one after another and were all caught alive by people.

Far out in the sea the water is very, very blue. You can see through it like glass. Far down in the water there are beautiful trees and plants. These trees and plants are so far from the top of the water that no one can see them. Fishes go in and out of the trees just like birds. This is the place where the Sea King’s city is.

The Sea King’s wife died many years before, so his old mother looked after him. She loved the Sea King’s six children very much, and they loved their grandmother, too. These six children were beautiful princesses. The youngest princess was the most beautiful: her eyes were as blue as the sea and her body was white like a rose. But, like all her sisters, she had no feet. The top of her body was like a girl’s body; and the rest of her body was like the body of a fish.

The six princesses often played all day in the big rooms inside the Sea King’s house. Beautiful flowers GREw out of the walls on all sides of them. When the windows were opened, fishes would go into the rooms just like birds come into our rooms. But the fishes were braver than birds They went up to the little princesses to eat food from their hands.

In front of the Sea King’s house there was a large garden full of red plants and blue plants. The flowers of these plants were like the burning sun. There was a blue light over the garden; you would think that you were up in the sky — not down in the sea.

Each of the little princesses had her own little garden inside the large garden. They could plant the flowers, which they themselves liked the most. The youngest princess planted red flowers in the garden, and she planted a red tree near the flowers. She was not at all like her sisters.

          A Better Tomorrow

People often wonder why historians go to so much trouble to preserve millions of books, documents and records.

Why do we have libraries? What good are these documents and history books? Why do we record and save the actions of men, the negotiations1 of government officials and the events during wars?

We do it because, sometimes, the voice of experience can cause us to stop, look and listen. Sometimes, past records, when understood in the right way, can help us decide what to do and what not to do. If we are ever to create lasting peace, we must seek its origins in human experience and in the records of human history.

From the stories of courage and devotion of men and women, we create the inspirations of youth. History records the suffering, the self-denial2, the devotion, and the heroic deeds of people in the past. These records can help us when we are confused and when we really need peace.

The main purpose of history is to create a better world. History gives a warning to those who promote war, and inspiration to those who seek peace.

In short, history helps us learn. Yesterday’s records can keep us from repeating yesterday’s mistakes. And from the pieces of mosaic4 assembled5 by historians come the great murals6 which represent the progress of mankind.

If you called just one additional customer each day, over the course of the next month you would talk to about 20 new people. If you learned just one more new word each day, in the next year you would increase your vocabulary by more than 300 words.

Should We Put A Limit on Private Cars?

With the rapiddevelopment of Chinese economic and the improvement of living standards ofordinary people, more and more private cars are on road. Some people thinkprivate cars can bring great convenience to the owners while others argue thatgovernment should put a limit on private cars. In my humble opinion, we shouldput a limit on private cars.

First of all, themore private cars, the more traffic jams. If people stuck on a traffic jam, itwill cost them a lot of time, some people even late for work. What’s more, nowadays finding a parking spot is much harder than before because there aretoo many cars on streets. Sometimes you just arrive at the destination, but youjust cannot find a place to park your car. The place is so crowded that youhave to park in other place which may be far away from your destination.

Secondly, theprice of gasoline and repairs are constantly rising, not to mention the pricesfor the insurance and the fear of being stolen. If you do not make enoughmoney, you can barely pay for the fees of the cars. This can cause great burdento your daily life.

Last but notleast, the cars produce tens of thousands of carbon dioxide, which will creategreenhouse effect and other serious environmental pollution. Someenvironmentalists predict that in the next few years, the ozone layer willfully disappear and will increase the rate of getting skin cancer. And the airwe breathe in is not as pure as before, do we really need to sacrifice ourfuture to enjoy the so called convenience?

Due to thesereason, I think people should think twice before they buy a private car. Weshould not only consider the increasing cost of owning a car, but also shouldthink about the future we have. It’s not only a personal thing, but also thewhole country, the whole world.

The Disadvantages of Private Cars

As cars are more affordable nowadays, thenumber of private car owners spurs. With cars, we can go anywhere anytime wewant. However, for the sake of protecting our environmentand of the public travelling convenience, it is a bad news.

First, more private cars mean more pollution. As the number of private cars increases sharply, the off gas surges.Consequently, the air quality is decreasing and even affects our health. Inconsideration of our environment and our health, I don’t think private carsbring us good to both our planet’s environment and our health.

Second, people are tending to drive carsthemselves going to work so that the traffic jam is serious in most cities. Wheneveryou go and look around in cities, you can see lots of cars not only parking alongthe road but also runs on the street. Especially around morning and evening, you can hardly move a step if you drive a car because of the heavy traffic. Nomatter how many roads the government has built, without lessening the number ofthe private cars, the need for road is always bigger than the supplied. Therefore, the most effective way is to encourage people take public transportationso that we can facilitate ourselves and also others.

All in all, private cars are so convenientfor us to getting around. However, take our air environment, our health and theconvenience of public life into account; we shouldn’t encourage people to buymore private cars. Instead, we should persuade people to take public transportationas often as possible to make our environment better and better.

Secondly, people should not forget theirorigin. According to the present situation, learning English is verysignificant, but learning Chinese is also couldn’t ignore. If a person can’tlearn his mother language well, how can he make others believe he can learnother things well. So I think they don’t need to learn a second language in ahungry. They can learn English when they grow older.

To sum up, for the sake of children’shealthy grow up, the adults should not force them to learn English in a youngage. Learning English can wait.

Students Should Be Encouraged to Take Part-time Jobs

More and more college students are taking part-time jobs. Some people argue that part-time jobs take up too much time that students have no time to focus on their studies, whereas others think that doing part-time jobs should be encouraged in that students can get rich experience from the jobs. As far as I concern, I think we should encourage students to do part-time jobs for the following reasons.

First of all, part-time job experience provides the opportunities for students to know about what jobs are really like and enhance their personal abilities. What’s more, such experience can help them be prepared psychologically for their future jobs. Second, the part-time jobs can enrich students’ daily life activities and help them to make more friends. If one has friends from different fields, these friends will help him with his personal development in the future. Third, taking part-time jobs can reduce the financial pressure. Many college students still ask their parents for money. This can be a heavy burden to some families. But if the students can do some part-time jobs and make money on their own, the family pressure can be relieved to some extent. Last but not least, part-time jobs can help students to find out their strengths and shortcomings. When they overcome the difficulties, they will become more confidence.

To sum up, doing part-time jobs has more advantages than disadvantages. The students can not live in the ivory tower forever. They will meet the challenges from this cruel world sooner or later. And doing part-time job is the first step to walk in this society.

Cars & the Youth

It has been widely reported that theeconomic recession has hobbled young people in debt and joblessness, making themless likely to buy some of the staples of adulthood, including cars. It becomesa big problem to car company, they may have tried to hook in young drivers, like most consumer companies, they like to appeal to young people early on, butlearned it was not working.

Several reasons can account for thisphenomenon. In the first place, cars have become less affordable forcash-strapped young adults, and driving simple does not seem as cool as it oncewas. For a young adult who just coming out of college, it is almost impossibleto buy a car by themselves within 3 years. Besides, many young adults arewilling to live in the place where is nearby their work place with publictransportation, according to the survey, and some of them are able to catch aride with others.

In the second place, young adults are toobusy to get a driver’s license. Most young people have to spend all day longfor their job, and even work overtime. They have to fend themselves, because ofit; they don’t have the bandwidth to take on anything else. What is more, lotsof young adults think that the internet may have also made driving more of ahassle than a convenience. Why drive to shopping centers when you can ordervirtually anything online?

In conclusion, it has become a fact thatyoung adults have less interested in cars, however, it may be a good thing forair pollution and crude oil crisis.

          Beauty

          美

          By Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is not to deny the force of beauty, or the reality of beauty; it is to suggest that beauty is not the only thing that exists, or the most important. It is to identify beauty with limitation. It is to say that beauty is not truth, but a kind of truth. It is to say that beauty is not a final goal, but a means to something beyond itself.

Beauty is the visible, manifest, and irresistible form of what we love and desire. It is the image of what we adore and the object of what we desire. It is the sun and the moon, the one in the day time and the other by night. It is the fair and the foul, the light and the dark, the good and the evil.

The word "beautiful" is used by way of comparison, to describe things that are less beautiful than another thing. We speak of beautiful flowers, but we do not call them beautiful as trees are beautiful. Trees are more beautiful than flowers; but still an elm or an oak is not so beautiful as a rose. Roses are more beautiful than trees; but still a rose is not so beautiful as a lily. Lilies are more beautiful than roses; but still a lily is not so beautiful as a violet. Violets are more beautiful than lilies; but still a violet is not so beautiful as a buttercup. This series might be extended without any term to it. The most beautiful thing of all would be the most beautiful word.

But in this series, as in all others, there must be an end. The last word must be said by death. The last beautiful must be seen in God. It is in this world as it is in heaven. Whatsoever we may say of beauty, we say of heaven; what whatsoever we say of heaven, we say of God. He is beauty absolute, unchangeable, everlasting. He is the end of all beauty that was anywhere finite and relative.

          We’re Just Beginning

“We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite…”

I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.

We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

I want the future to be better than the past. I don’t want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.

The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.
